Orthodontics is the dental discipline focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of misalignment issues related to teeth and jaws. A crucial aspect of orthodontic therapy is the accurate identification of the problem. Hence, in addition to conventional orthodontic records like intraoral and extraoral photographs, two-dimensional radiographs, and impressions, our department employs advanced technologies such as stereophotogrammetric, conebeam computer tomographic, and intraoral scanner images for a three-dimensional assessment of soft tissue, hard tissue, and intraoral structures.
Teeth alignment can be achieved at any age. Typically, orthodontic brackets are placed on the frontal side of the teeth, but advanced techniques allow lingual placement (on the back side of teeth). Brackets may be constructed from stainless steel (gray-colored) or porcelain (white-colored). Clear aligners, widely used today, are discreet removable splints that facilitate orthodontic therapy without the use of braces.

During childhood, jaw misalignments in all dimensions are addressed using orthopedic appliances. Consequently, we recommend consulting with an orthodontist soon after the eruption of the first permanent molars, around 7 years of age. Treatment of skeletal issues not addressed in childhood may involve jaw surgery, known as orthognathic surgery, performed by a plastic surgeon. In our department, we thoroughly discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these therapeutic alternatives with patients to determine the most suitable approach for their well-being.
Application of preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments, including the use of early orthopedic appliances to address jaw malpositions, plays a crucial role in our comprehensive orthodontic approach.
